What writing the TOEFL involves
When Nigerian candidates talk about writing the TOEFL in Nigeria, they mean two things: sitting the full TOEFL iBT at an approved centre, and the dedicated Writing section within it. The TOEFL Writing section has two tasks. The Integrated Writing task asks you to read a passage, listen to a short lecture, then write a response connecting the two. The Writing for an Academic Discussion task shows an online class discussion and asks you to add your own contribution. Both answers are typed, not handwritten, and the whole TOEFL now runs in under two hours.
How TOEFL writing is scored
Each writing task is marked on a rubric and scaled into the section’s 0 to 30 band, which feeds your overall TOEFL score out of 120. Examiners reward a clear thesis, well-organised paragraphs, accurate use of the source material and controlled grammar, far more than long, over-decorated sentences.
