What is the TOEFL iBT and who needs it?

The TOEFL measures academic English across four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. Each section is scored from 0 to 30, for a total out of 120. The current test has been shortened and now runs in under two hours. Nigerian candidates take the TOEFL for undergraduate and postgraduate admission abroad, for funded PhD and research positions, and increasingly for nursing and other professional registration in the US, Canada and the UK. If a university or programme lists English proficiency as a requirement, a strong TOEFL score is one of the cleanest ways to satisfy it.

How to register for the TOEFL in Nigeria

The standard TOEFL iBT fee in Nigeria runs about $220, which is roughly ₦340,000 at today's exchange rates, and ETS adds more if you register late or reschedule. TOEFL test dates and centres in Nigeria

There are 25+ TOEFL iBT dates across 2026, roughly every two weeks from January to June. TOEFL scores and what universities require

Because the TOEFL is scored out of 120, knowing your target band matters. As a guide, most US universities ask for 80 to 100, with the most competitive schools wanting 100 to 110 or higher. Canadian universities usually look for around 86 to 90, and most UK Russell Group universities sit near 88 to 100. TOEFL vs IELTS for Nigerian candidates

Both the TOEFL and the IELTS are widely accepted, and neither is easier overall. The TOEFL is fully computer-based, with Speaking recorded into a microphone, which suits candidates comfortable typing and used to North American English. The IELTS Speaking test is a face-to-face interview instead. How to prepare and score 110+

For most Nigerian candidates, six to ten weeks of structured study is enough to clear 100, and a focused track pushes strong candidates past 110.
