The complete guide

TOEFL in Nigeria, explained.

The TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language, internet-based test) is the English proficiency exam most Nigerian students take to study abroad. Run by ETS, it is accepted by thousands of universities across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia, as well as by many scholarship boards, professional licensing bodies and immigration authorities. If you are applying to a foreign university from Nigeria, the TOEFL is very often the test that proves your English is ready for it.

What is the TOEFL iBT and who needs it?

The TOEFL measures academic English across four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. Each section is scored from 0 to 30, for a total out of 120. The current test has been shortened and now runs in under two hours. Nigerian candidates take the TOEFL for undergraduate and postgraduate admission abroad, for funded PhD and research positions, and increasingly for nursing and other professional registration in the US, Canada and the UK. If a university or programme lists English proficiency as a requirement, a strong TOEFL score is one of the cleanest ways to satisfy it.

How to register for the TOEFL in Nigeria

Registering through Mafit Study Centre works from any of the 36 states. You speak to a counsellor, confirm your goal, pick a test date, and pay. The one document you must have is a valid international passport, because the exact name on it is your only accepted ID on test day. You can register online without travelling to Lagos or Abuja, and your free preparation activates within 24 hours. Apply the promo code Mafit at registration to bring your fee down, or start on the Pay Small Small plan and complete the balance before your test date.

TOEFL fees in Nigeria 2026

The standard TOEFL iBT fee in Nigeria runs about $220, which is roughly ₦340,000 at today's exchange rates, and ETS adds more if you register late or reschedule. Registering through Mafit with code Mafit brings your total to ₦250,000, below the standard fee, and unlike a direct booking that single fee also bundles your classes, six full mock exams, Magoosh Premium, and the Kaplan, Barron's and ETS textbook stack at no extra cost. Most outlets charge the full rate and then bill separately for materials. The Pay Small Small option lets you begin with ₦70,000 today and pay the rest when you are ready to fix your date.

TOEFL test dates and centres in Nigeria

There are 25+ TOEFL iBT dates across 2026, roughly every two weeks from January to June. Sittings run in Lagos, Abuja, Owerri, Asaba, Enugu, Jos and Port Harcourt, and Mafit's flagship centres sit in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, with live online classes reaching every other state and the FCT. Popular dates fill first, so the safe move is to book six to eight weeks before your university deadline. You can browse the 2026 calendar and filter it by your city above.

TOEFL scores and what universities require

Because the TOEFL is scored out of 120, knowing your target band matters. As a guide, most US universities ask for 80 to 100, with the most competitive schools wanting 100 to 110 or higher. Canadian universities usually look for around 86 to 90, and most UK Russell Group universities sit near 88 to 100. Your scores stay valid for two years, and the ETS MyBest feature combines your best section scores across sittings into one superscore that many universities accept. Not sure where you stand? Our score calculator and university matcher shows which universities accept your level instantly.

TOEFL vs IELTS for Nigerian candidates

Both the TOEFL and the IELTS are widely accepted, and neither is easier overall. The TOEFL is fully computer-based, with Speaking recorded into a microphone, which suits candidates comfortable typing and used to North American English. The IELTS Speaking test is a face-to-face interview instead. The best choice is the one your target universities prefer and the one that plays to your strengths, and our counsellors help you decide before you commit a single naira.

How to prepare and score 110+

For most Nigerian candidates, six to ten weeks of structured study is enough to clear 100, and a focused track pushes strong candidates past 110. The Mafit programme pairs in-person classes in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt with live online lectures, six mock exams, and the Peer Tag-Team speaking and writing exchange that closes the gap most candidates lose marks on. Classes are led by our Head of Language Studies, a published British Council author with a double Master's. Score 110 or higher on test day and we pay you ₦20,000 cash.

Start free today on Pay Small Small, or register in full with code Mafit. A counsellor maps your TOEFL journey within one working day.

TOEFL Nigeria 2026 FAQ

Questions, answered.

How much does the TOEFL iBT cost in Nigeria in 2026?
The standard TOEFL iBT fee in Nigeria runs about $220, which is roughly ₦340,000 at current exchange rates. Registering through Mafit with promo code Mafit brings your total to ₦250,000, below the standard fee, and your fee also bundles free classes, six mocks, Magoosh Premium and the full textbook stack at no extra cost.
Can I pay for the TOEFL in instalments?
Yes. Our Pay Small Small plan lets you start with ₦70,000, which immediately activates your classes, mocks and materials. You pay the balance any time before you lock your test date, and the ₦70,000 is part of the ₦250,000 total, not an extra fee.
What documents do I need to register?
A valid international passport, with the exact name and details you register with, since it is your only accepted ID on test day. A national ID card, voter's card, NIN slip or driver's licence cannot be used.
Are the free classes truly free?
Yes. Every class, mock, textbook and Magoosh account is bundled into your registration with no hidden charges. If a centre charges separately for classes after taking your fee, you are paying twice.
How long does it take to score 100+?
For most candidates, 6 to 10 weeks of structured study. Strong English speakers often need 4 to 6 weeks. We start you with a free diagnostic mock, then build a plan around your weakest section.
Who teaches the classes?
Our Head of Language Studies, Alice, holds a double Master's and is a published British Council author with eight years of experience, supported by award-winning instructors in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.
How is the TOEFL iBT scored?
Four sections, Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, are each scored 0 to 30, for a total of 0 to 120. Universities look at your total and sometimes a minimum per section.
What score do I need for US and Canadian universities?
Most US universities ask for 80 to 100, with top schools wanting 100 to 110+. Canadian universities typically want around 86 to 90. Our matcher above shows where your score fits.
How long are TOEFL scores valid?
TOEFL scores are valid for two years from your test date. After that you would need to retake the test if a university still requires it.
Where are the TOEFL test centres in Nigeria?
Sittings run in Lagos, Abuja, Owerri, Asaba, Enugu, Jos and Port Harcourt. Mafit's flagship centres are in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, with online prep reaching all 36 states and the FCT.
How often is the TOEFL held?
There are 25+ TOEFL iBT dates across 2026, with sittings roughly every two weeks. Popular dates fill early, so book 6 to 8 weeks before your application deadline.
Can I take the TOEFL outside Lagos and Abuja?
Yes. Sittings run in Owerri, Asaba, Enugu, Jos and Port Harcourt too, and our live online classes reach you wherever you are in Nigeria.
What is the TOEFL iBT?
It is the internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language from ETS, measuring academic English across Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, and accepted by universities and immigration bodies worldwide.
What is the structure of the new shorter TOEFL?
The current TOEFL iBT runs under two hours, with Reading, Listening, Speaking, and a shorter Writing section that now includes a Writing for an Academic Discussion task.
What is the MyBest Score?
MyBest combines your highest section scores across all your sittings in the last two years into one superscore. Many universities accept it, though some still want a single test date.
What is the fastest way to raise my score?
Take a diagnostic mock, fix your weakest section first, and practise daily under timed conditions. For most Nigerian candidates, Speaking gives the quickest gains through daily recorded practice and feedback.
How do I handle the Nigerian accent in Speaking?
Clarity matters more than accent. Train with North American audio, slow down, avoid fillers like 'as in' and 'now-now', and record yourself daily. Our Peer Tag-Team programme is built to close this gap fast.
What are the top mistakes candidates make?
Running out of time, weak note-taking in Listening, and over-long, over-polite Writing. We drill timing and structure so you never lose easy points.
TOEFL or IELTS, which is better for Nigerians?
Both are widely accepted. TOEFL is fully computer-based and academic-focused, which suits candidates comfortable with typing and North American English. We help you choose based on your target universities.
Is the TOEFL easier than the IELTS?
Neither is easier overall, they test differently. TOEFL Speaking is into a microphone while IELTS is face to face, and many find TOEFL Reading and Listening more predictable. We match the test to your strengths.
Is the Duolingo English Test a valid alternative?
Some universities accept it, but many top schools and visa routes still prefer TOEFL or IELTS. Always check each university's exact policy, which our counsellors do with you.
What should I bring on test day?
Only your valid international passport, the same one used to register. Arrive early and leave phones and bags in the lockers, as nothing is allowed in the test room.
When will I get my results?
TOEFL iBT scores are typically available online within about four to eight days of your test, with official reports sent to the universities you selected.
Can I retake the TOEFL if my score is low?
Yes. You can retake the TOEFL as often as you need, with a short gap between sittings, and we coach you to get it right the first time so you usually will not need to.
