What the GRE is
The GRE General Test (Graduate Record Examinations) is the admissions test most Nigerian candidates take for graduate study, from master’s programmes to funded PhDs. Run by ETS, it is accepted by universities and business schools across the United States, Canada, the UK, Europe and beyond.
The GRE format
Since its 2023 redesign the GRE is a computer-based, section-adaptive test that runs in under two hours. It has one Analytical Writing task, two Verbal Reasoning sections and two Quantitative Reasoning sections, testing reasoning, vocabulary in context and core maths rather than rote facts.
How the GRE is scored
Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are each scored from 130 to 170, for a combined 260 to 340, while Analytical Writing is scored separately from 0 to 6. Most competitive programmes look closely at your Quant score for STEM and your Verbal score for the humanities.
GRE centres and dates in Nigeria
The computer-based GRE runs in Lagos, Abuja and Owerri, with frequent dates throughout the year, so you can match the test to your application deadline. Registration is open online from every state in Nigeria.
