Australian PR from Nigeria, explained

How skilled migration to Australia works.

It is a points-tested system

Australia selects skilled migrants on points. You earn points for your age, your English, your qualifications and your work experience, and the more you score, the stronger your chances of an invitation to apply for permanent residence. The minimum is 65 points, but in practice you want as high as possible.

Step one: a skills assessment

Your occupation must sit on Australia’s skilled occupation lists, and you need a positive skills assessment from the assessing authority for that occupation. This confirms your qualifications and experience meet the Australian standard. We help you identify your occupation and prepare the assessment.

Step two: your English score

English is worth real points. A Superior result is worth up to 20 points, a Proficient result up to 10, often the gap between an invitation and a long wait. Australia accepts IELTS, PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT, and this is exactly where Mafit is strongest.

Step three: the EOI and the invitation

You submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect with your points claim. When your score is competitive, the Department issues an invitation to apply, and you lodge your visa with full documentation. We prepare and guide the whole file.

The main visa routes

Most people use the Skilled Independent visa (189), which needs no sponsor, the Skilled Nominated visa (190), with a state or territory nomination worth extra points, or the Skilled Work Regional visa (491), a provisional route that leads to permanent residence.

From PR to citizenship

Permanent residence lets you live in Australia indefinitely, with Medicare and family included. After meeting the residence requirement you can apply for Australian citizenship. This is legal, documented migration handled by an openly operating Nigerian team, and the final decision rests with the Australian authorities.

The points test

Where your points come from.

Australia adds up points across these factors. We work out your score, then build a plan to lift it, starting with the one we control best, your English.

Up to 30

Your age

Points peak in your late twenties and early thirties, then taper. Younger applicants score strongly.

Up to 20

Your English

A Superior result is worth up to 20 points, Proficient up to 10. This is where we move you.

Up to 20

Your qualifications

A recognised degree, masters or doctorate, plus any Australian study, adds points.

Up to 20

Skilled work experience

Years of relevant skilled work, in Nigeria and abroad, count toward your score.

Up to 10

Partner skills

A skilled partner, or being single, can add points to your claim.

+5 to +15

State or regional

A 190 state nomination adds 5 points and a 491 regional route adds 15.

Points values are set by the Department of Home Affairs and can change. We confirm your exact, current points claim during your assessment.

Which visa is yours

The skilled visa routes.

Australia has more than one skilled route. Tap the one that sounds most like you. We confirm the exact subclass for your profile before anything is committed.

Skilled Independent, 189

The route for skilled workers whose occupation is on the relevant list and who need no sponsor or nominator. You are invited purely on your points, and it is a permanent visa from the day it is granted, letting you and your family live and work anywhere in Australia.

No sponsorPoints-testedPermanent from day one

Skilled Nominated, 190

You are nominated by an Australian state or territory, which adds 5 points and can open occupations not available on the 189. In return you commit to living in that state for a period. It is also a permanent visa for you and your family.

State nominationPlus 5 pointsPermanent

Skilled Work Regional, 491

A provisional visa for skilled workers nominated by a state or sponsored by an eligible relative in regional Australia. It adds 15 points, the biggest boost in the system, and after you meet the income and residence conditions it leads to permanent residence through the 191 visa.

Plus 15 pointsRegionalLeads to PR

Employer Sponsored, 186 and 482

If an Australian employer wants to sponsor you, the Employer Nomination Scheme, 186, is a direct permanent route, while the Skills in Demand visa, 482, is a temporary work visa that can lead to permanent residence. We assess honestly whether a sponsor route is realistic for you.

Nurses, midwives, aged-care workers and doctors are in sustained demand in every state.

Shortage list

Engineering

Civil, mechanical, electrical and mining engineers are long-standing shortage occupations.

Year after year

IT and technology

Software, cyber security, data and broader ICT roles fill the skilled lists every year.

Strong regionally

Trades

Electricians, plumbers, fitters, motor mechanics and chefs are highly sought, especially in the regions.

Real shortage

Teaching

Early childhood, secondary maths and science teachers are in genuine shortage.

On the lists

Accounting and finance

Accountants, auditors and finance professionals remain on the skilled occupation lists.

Occupation lists are set by the Australian government and change over time. We confirm your occupation and its current status during your assessment.

The Mafit advantage

In Australia’s points test, your English score is points. A Superior result, IELTS 8 across the four skills or PTE Academic 79, is worth up to 20 points. Proficient is worth 10. That single factor often decides who gets invited and who keeps waiting.

This is exactly what we do. Mafit is a British Council IELTS test centre and runs PTE Academic and TOEFL preparation too, with free classes, mock exams and study materials. We turn your English into the points your application needs.

Australia PR FAQ

Questions, answered.

01Can a Nigerian get permanent residence in Australia?+
Yes. Through skilled migration you can be granted a permanent visa without a job offer on the Skilled Independent route, the 189. You earn points for your age, English, qualifications and experience, and we guide the whole process from Nigeria.
02What is the Australian points system?+
Australia selects skilled migrants on points. You score for age, English, qualifications, skilled work experience, a skilled partner and any state or regional nomination. The higher your total, the stronger your chance of an invitation to apply.
03What is the minimum points score?+
The minimum to lodge an Expression of Interest is 65 points, but invitations usually go to higher scores, and the bar varies by occupation. We aim to lift your score as high as possible, starting with your English.
04Do I need a job offer or a sponsor?+
Not for the Skilled Independent visa, the 189. The 190 needs a state or territory nomination, the 491 needs regional nomination or an eligible relative, and the employer routes need a sponsor. We confirm which fits you.
05Which visa should I apply for?+
It depends on your occupation, your points and whether a state or employer will back you. We assess your profile and recommend the strongest route, whether that is 189, 190, 491 or an employer-sponsored visa.
06How long does the process take?+
It varies with your occupation, your points and the Department’s invitation rounds, from several months upward. A complete, well-prepared file keeps things moving, which is what we focus on.
