If you are planning Canada permanent residence from Nigeria, the English test is one of the few parts of the process you fully control. Get it right and it can add close to a hundred points to your Express Entry score. Book the wrong version, or let your results expire at the wrong time, and you can lose months.

Here is what you actually need to know, in the order you will need it.

Which IELTS does Canada accept?

For Express Entry, Canada accepts IELTS General Training. IELTS Academic is not on the list, and IELTS One Skill Retake results are not accepted either.

This is the single most expensive mistake people make. Academic is the version most Nigerians have heard of, because it is the one universities ask for, so it is easy to book it by default. An Academic result, however good, will not count for your Express Entry profile.

The two versions share the same Listening and Speaking tests. They differ in Reading and Writing. General Training Reading uses everyday and workplace material: notices, adverts, job descriptions, short articles. In Writing, the first task is a letter (to a landlord, an employer, a friend) instead of describing a chart. Many candidates find General Training Reading a little friendlier, but the band scores needed for Canada are high, so it is not an easier test overall.

One exception: if you are going to Canada to study, your college or university sets the requirement, and most ask for IELTS Academic. Check the exact test on your school's admission page before you book.

What IELTS score do you need for Canada?

Canada does not use IELTS bands directly. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) converts each of your four band scores into a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level. The Federal Skilled Worker Program, the route most Nigerian applicants use, needs at least CLB 7 in every skill.

CLB levelListeningReadingWritingSpeaking
CLB 10 and above8.58.07.57.5
CLB 98.07.07.07.0
CLB 87.56.56.56.5
CLB 76.06.06.06.0
CLB 65.55.05.55.5

Notice two things in that table. First, each skill is judged on its own, so your overall band score does not matter here. A 7.5 overall with a 5.5 in Writing is CLB 6 for Writing, and that one skill can keep you out of the Federal Skilled Worker Program. Second, Listening needs a higher band than the others at every level. For CLB 9 you need 8.0 in Listening but 7.0 in the rest.

Why CLB 9 is worth chasing

Your Express Entry profile is ranked by the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), and invitations go to the highest scores in each draw. Language is one of the few factors you can still move after you have finished school and built your work history, and the jump from CLB 7 to CLB 9 is unusually large because it counts twice: once in the language section, and again in the "skill transferability" points that combine your English with your education and work experience.

Take a simple example: a single applicant with a bachelor's degree and three years of work experience in Nigeria. Using IRCC's published points:

Foreign work experience with language2550
Total from these factors106199

That is 93 extra points from the same person, with the same degree and the same job, just from moving each IELTS skill from CLB 7 to CLB 9. For many applicants, that is the difference between waiting in the pool and receiving an invitation. It is why we usually suggest preparing for CLB 9 from the start rather than aiming for the minimum and retaking later.

If you are married

Your spouse or partner can also take an English test. Their result adds up to 20 points to your profile, 5 for each skill at CLB 9 or higher. It is often the cheapest extra points available to a couple.

How much is IELTS for Canada in Nigeria?

IELTS for Canada costs the same as any IELTS General Training test. The standard fee in Nigeria is ₦299,000. Registering through Mafit with code MAFIT brings it to ₦279,000, payable in naira by bank transfer or card, and in instalments if that helps.

The fee covers the test itself. Through Mafit, your registration also includes a free computer based mock test, free preparation classes and a self paced study account, so you are not paying separately for prep. You can see the full IELTS fee, dates and centres or the steps to pay in naira.

Budget for one more thing: if you fall short in a single skill, Canada needs a full retake, because One Skill Retake is not accepted. Preparing properly for the first attempt is almost always cheaper than paying twice.

How long is IELTS valid for Canada, and when should you test?

Your results must be less than 2 years old twice: when you create your Express Entry profile, and again when you submit your permanent residence application after an invitation. Profiles can sit in the pool for months, so timing matters.

  • Test early enough to have your result before you build your profile, because you need it to enter the pool at all.
  • If your result is already a year old, check how long your profile might wait. If it could expire before you are invited and apply, plan your retest now.
  • Keep your Test Report Form number handy. You will enter it, with your exact scores and test date, in your Express Entry profile.

IELTS, CELPIP or PTE Core?

IRCC accepts three English tests for Express Entry, and all three can be taken in Nigeria: IELTS General Training, CELPIP General and PTE Core. They convert to the same CLB levels, so choose the one that suits the way you test.

  • IELTS General Training has the most dates and centres, including Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, on paper or on computer, with a face to face speaking test. Many people find speaking to a real examiner more natural.
  • CELPIP General is fully on computer, with Canadian accents and everyday Canadian situations. Speaking is recorded into a microphone.
  • PTE Core is on computer and scored by machine, with quick results. It suits fast typists who are comfortable speaking to a screen.

If you have never taken any of them, a free diagnostic is the quickest way to find out which one plays to your strengths.

How to prepare for a CLB 9 score

If you already use English at work, plan for roughly six to ten weeks of steady preparation to move from a comfortable 6.5 to the 7.0 and 8.0 bands that CLB 9 asks for. The gains come from technique more than vocabulary.

  • Listening first. It needs the highest band, 8.0, so it deserves the most practice. Train on spelling and number answers, where most marks are lost.
  • Writing Task 1 letters. Learn the three tones (formal, semi formal, informal) and cover every bullet point in the prompt. Missing one caps your score.
  • Writing Task 2. Plan for five minutes, write a clear position, and keep to about 280 words so you have time to check.
  • Speaking. Extend your answers naturally and practise Part 2, the two minute talk, until it feels routine.
  • Full mock tests. Sit at least two under real timing before test day, so nothing about the format surprises you.

How to register, and what happens on test day

  1. Choose your date and centre on our IELTS registration page, and select General Training.
  2. Create your free account and pay in naira, in full or in instalments. Your free preparation opens the same day.
  3. Your counsellor confirms your seat, usually within 24 hours, and helps you plan your preparation around the date.

Register with the name exactly as it appears on your international passport, and bring that passport on test day. Your Speaking test can be on the same day as the other three parts or within a few days of it. Results arrive within a few days on computer, and in about two weeks on paper.
