How to Prepare for the Digital SAT in Nigeria: An 8 Week Plan for Students and Parents
The SAT is now fully digital, taken on the Bluebook app, and lasts 2 hours 14 minutes. Each section adapts to how you do in its first half. Eight weeks of regular practice, built around the free official Bluebook tests, is enough for most students to move their score.
Parents often ask me how many hours a day their child should study for the SAT. My answer is usually less than they expect, but every day. The SAT rewards students who have seen every question type many times and know the clock, much more than students who cram for a fortnight.

How the digital SAT works
The SAT takes 2 hours 14 minutes plus a 10 minute break. It has two sections, Reading and Writing, then Math, each split into two modules. The second module of each section adapts to how you did in the first. Each section is scored from 200 to 800, for a total of 400 to 1600.
| Section | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing | 54 | 64 minutes (two modules) |
| Math | 44 | 70 minutes (two modules) |
You take the test on a laptop or tablet using the College Board Bluebook app. Because the second module gets harder if you do well in the first, careful work in module one matters a lot.
Reading and Writing
Every question comes with its own short passage, a few sentences to a short paragraph, so there are no long texts to wade through. Questions test vocabulary in context, understanding the main idea, using evidence, grammar and punctuation, and how to improve a piece of writing. Students who read widely, from newspapers to novels, find this section noticeably easier.
Grammar questions follow a small set of rules: commas, semicolons, subject and verb agreement, verb tense, pronouns. Learn them properly once and you can collect these marks on every test.
Math
Math covers algebra, advanced math, problem solving and data analysis, and geometry and trigonometry. A Desmos graphing calculator is built into the app for the whole section, and learning to use it well is one of the fastest ways to gain points. Many Nigerian students are strong in calculation but lose marks on long word problems, so practise turning a paragraph into an equation.
An 8 week SAT plan
| Week | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | A full official practice test in Bluebook. Note the score for each section. |
| 2 to 3 | Grammar rules and algebra foundations. Short daily practice sets. |
| 4 to 5 | Reading question types, advanced math, Desmos skills. |
| 6 | A second full practice test, then review every mistake. |
| 7 | The weakest question types from your reviews. Timed modules. |
| 8 | A final full practice test early in the week, light review, rest. |
About an hour a day on weekdays and a longer block at the weekend works for most students alongside school.
Choosing a test date
The upcoming SAT dates are 7 November 2026, 5 December 2026, 6 March 2027, 1 May 2027 and 5 June 2027. Registration closes about two weeks before each one. Pick a date that leaves time for a second attempt before university deadlines, because many students score higher the second time.
For parents
- Book the date early. A fixed date turns "preparing" into a plan.
- Protect a regular slot. An hour after school is better than a whole Saturday once a month.
- Ask to see practice test scores. They show progress far better than hours studied.
- Check the device. Students need a laptop or tablet that runs Bluebook, fully charged on test day.
