Since September 2023, ETS has run a shorter GRE. The Issue essay is the only writing task. Verbal and Quant each have two section-adaptive blocks. There is no scheduled break. Your scores release in 8 to 10 days, not 15. Half the Nigerian centres still advertise the old format. We do not.

Q3Why does my Nigerian debit card fail on the ETS GRE payment page?
Three reasons, all stacking against you: Naira card FX limits. The CBN restricts international transactions on most Nigerian naira cards to a $20 monthly limit. The GRE fee is $220, which exceeds the cap. ETS card decline policy. Even before the limits, ETS has flagged Nigerian-issued cards as high-risk because of repeated failed transactions and chargebacks from card-not-present fraud. They auto-decline most Nigerian BINs (Bank Identification Numbers). Currency mismatch. ETS bills in USD only. Even when a transaction passes the FX limit, it bounces because the card cannot settle in dollars. The result is that almost no Nigerian candidate can pay ETS directly from their naira card. The workarounds are listed below.
Q4How do I pay for the GRE from Nigeria in 2026?
You have four working paths, in order of how Mafit candidates use them: Pay Mafit in naira directly. The simplest. Bank transfer to Mafit at the prevailing daily rate (around ₦320,000 with MAFIT discount). We pay ETS in USD on your behalf. No FX headache for you. Pay4Me app. A third-party service. You fund the app in naira, it pays ETS in USD. The exchange rate is competitive but you pay a transaction fee on top. EverTry virtual dollar card. You fund an EverTry virtual card in naira, then use it as a normal dollar card on the ETS site. Works well but you carry the FX risk yourself. Domiciliary account. If you have a USD domiciliary account at a Nigerian bank with a dollar debit card, you can pay ETS directly. Most candidates do not have this. Of the four, paying Mafit in naira directly is the only one where you know your total cost upfront with no FX surprises. We absorb the conversion risk on your behalf.
Q5Can I pay for the GRE in instalments in Nigeria?
Yes. The official ETS pathway requires payment in full at registration, but Mafit operates a Pay Small Small plan that lets you secure your GRE date with as little as ₦90,000 . You complete the balance in two or three instalments before your test date. The plan works like this. Pay ₦90,000 today to lock your test date and unlock your prep. Pay ₦115,000 by week four of prep. Q6How far in advance should I book my GRE test date?
Book at least 10 to 12 weeks before your sitting . That gives you 8 weeks of full Mafit prep, plus a 2-week mock sprint, plus a one-week buffer for unexpected interruptions like NEPA outages or family commitments. From a university application angle, work backwards from the earliest deadline on your list. Most US Fall 2027 graduate applications close between December 1 and January 15. ETS releases scores in 8 to 10 days, but allow a 5-day buffer for score reports to reach the universities. So your latest possible GRE date for a December 1 deadline is around October 25. Lagos slots fill fastest for Monday and Thursday morning sittings. If you have a specific date in mind, book at least 8 weeks ahead, preferably 12.
Q7Where are the GRE test centres in Nigeria?
There are three computer-based GRE test centres physically located in Nigeria: Lagos. Mafit centre at 3rd Floor, MAN House, 77 Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ikeja. Abuja. Mafit centre at 5th Floor, Unity Bank Towers, Plot 785, 1 Herbert Macaulay Way, Central Business District. Port Harcourt. Mafit centre at Riz Plaza, Plot 19, Stadium Road, Rumuomasi, Rivers State. For all other states, you sit the GRE either at one of these three centres after arranging travel, or you book the GRE at Home remote option, which lets you sit the official GRE from your bedroom with a webcam and live ETS proctor. The GRE Subject Test is administered only in Lagos and Abuja, and only when your specific subject is required by a university.
Q8How long is the new shorter GRE in 2026?
The current GRE General Test runs for 1 hour and 58 minutes . ETS reduced the test from the older 3 hours 45 minutes format in September 2023, and that shorter structure has remained the standard for 2024, 2025 and 2026. If a centre in Nigeria still advertises a 3 hour 45 minute GRE, that information is out of date. Mafit was the first registration partner in Nigeria to fully restructure prep around the shorter test. Common Myth Some say the shorter GRE is easier. That is incorrect. With fewer questions, each question carries more weight on your final score. The test is more efficient, not less rigorous.
Q9How long should I prepare for the GRE in Nigeria?
Most Nigerian candidates need 8 to 12 weeks of focused preparation to reach a 320 plus GRE score from a cold start. The Mafit GRE programme runs over 8 weeks of structured classes, plus a final two-week revision and mock sprint. The exact length depends on three factors: Your starting baseline. A diagnostic mock in week one tells us where you are. Candidates already in the 305 to 315 range need only 6 weeks of targeted work. Candidates starting below 290 should plan for 10 to 12 weeks. Your target score. A 310 target needs less than a 325 target. The difference between 310 and 325 is the difference between accurate basics and mastery of GRE traps. Your weekly study hours. 12 hours a week works for most. Below 8 hours a week, you should add a fourth week.

A good GRE score is 320 or above on the 260 to 340 scale. This means a combined Verbal plus Quantitative score of 320, with both sections balanced. What "good" means varies by destination and programme tier: Top 10 US universities (Harvard, MIT, Stanford): 330 plus, with section scores above 165. Top 25 US universities (Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Berkeley): 325 plus. Top 50 US universities (Georgia Tech, Michigan, NYU): 315 plus. Mid-tier US graduate schools: 305 to 315. Q13How long are GRE scores valid for university applications?
GRE scores are valid for five years from your test date. A GRE taken in January 2026 will count for applications submitted up to December 2030. ETS automatically retires scores older than five years from your reportable record. Most US universities want scores from within three years. A few competitive programmes prefer scores from within two years. Always check the specific programme website. For Nigerian candidates planning to apply for a Fall 2026 or Spring 2027 intake, taking the GRE between now and June 2026 gives you ample buffer. Mafit Tip Do not delay your GRE waiting for a perfect prep moment. Sit it once in your target window. If your score is below target, you can retake. If it is above target, the score sits in your ETS account ready to send when applications open.
Q14If I score below my target, can I retake the GRE?
Yes. You can retake the GRE up to five times in a rolling 12-month period , with a 21-day waiting period between attempts. So if your first attempt is January 5, your earliest retake is January 26. Most Mafit candidates score in their target range on the first attempt. For those who retake, the typical score jump is 8 to 14 points, especially when the gap is on Quant. They do not. Universities see your best ScoreSelect score, and many admissions officers say it is better to retake and improve than to apply with a weak score.
Q15Should I take the GRE or the GMAT for an MBA?
Both the GRE and GMAT are accepted by virtually every top global MBA programme in 2026, including Harvard Business School, Stanford GSB, Wharton, INSEAD, London Business School and Lagos Business School. Schools officially state they have no preference between the two. In practice, the GRE is the better choice for Nigerian MBA candidates in three situations: You are also considering a Master's degree. The GRE keeps both MBA and MS doors open. The GMAT is MBA-only. You are stronger in Verbal than Quant. GRE Verbal is more vocabulary-heavy and forgiving than GMAT Verbal, which leans on logical reasoning that some candidates find harder. You prefer flexible pacing. GRE lets you skip and return within a section. GMAT does not. The GMAT remains slightly preferred at some traditional finance and consulting recruiters. If your post-MBA target is a major Wall Street bank or McKinsey, ask alumni from those firms what they took.
Q16Is the GRE required for US graduate school applications?
Mostly yes. The United States is the GRE's home market and over 1,200 US universities accept GRE scores for graduate admission. For Master's and PhD programmes in Engineering, Computer Science, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities and most professional fields, the GRE is either required or strongly recommended.
