How to Prepare for CELPIP from Nigeria: Format, Scores and a 6 Week Plan
CELPIP-General is a computer based English test for Canada that takes under three hours in one sitting. Each skill gets a level from 0 to 12 that matches the Canadian Language Benchmarks directly. Speaking is recorded on the computer, not with an examiner, and the test uses Canadian English throughout.
Most Nigerian candidates heading to Canada know IELTS and have never heard of CELPIP until someone mentions it. For many of them it turns out to suit them better, especially those who freeze in front of an examiner. But it is its own test with its own habits, and an IELTS plan will not fully prepare you for it.

What CELPIP is
CELPIP is an English test accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. CELPIP-General covers all four skills and is used for permanent residence, including Express Entry. CELPIP-General LS tests only Listening and Speaking and is used for citizenship.
If you are applying for permanent residence, you need CELPIP-General. Check your programme's minimum level for each skill before you book.
The CELPIP-General format
| Section | What you do | Approx. time |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | Six parts, from conversations to news items and discussions | about 47 to 55 minutes |
| Reading | Four parts: correspondence, diagrams, information and viewpoints | about 55 to 60 minutes |
| Writing | Two typed tasks: an email and a response to a survey question | about 53 to 60 minutes |
| Speaking | Eight short tasks recorded into a microphone | about 15 to 20 minutes |
All four skills are taken on a computer in one sitting of under three hours.
CELPIP levels and the CLB
Each skill gets a level from 0 to 12. Levels 3 to 12 match CLB 3 to 12 directly, so a CELPIP 9 in Reading is CLB 9 in Reading. That makes your Express Entry points easy to work out. CLB 7 in every skill is the usual minimum for the Federal Skilled Worker programme, and CLB 9 in every skill earns significantly more points.
For more on how language scores drive your CRS points, see our guide to IELTS for Canada; the same CLB levels apply to CELPIP.
How CELPIP differs from IELTS
- Speaking is recorded, not face to face. You speak to the computer, with a short preparation time for each task. Some candidates find this easier; others miss the human conversation.
- Canadian English. Accents, vocabulary and everyday situations are Canadian. Listen to Canadian radio and podcasts while you prepare.
- One sitting. Everything happens in one session, including Speaking.
- Practical topics. Many tasks are about everyday life and work rather than academic subjects.
A 6 week CELPIP plan
| Week | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | A free official practice test. Learn every task type. |
| 2 | Listening and Reading parts under time. |
| 3 | Writing: timed emails and survey responses, each one reviewed. |
| 4 | Speaking: record all eight task types, listen back, repeat. |
| 5 | A full mock on a computer, then review. |
| 6 | Fix the weakest skill, light practice, rest before the test. |
Tips by skill
Listening. Each recording plays once. Note answers as you go rather than waiting to hear the whole passage.
Reading. Do not read every passage word for word; read the questions first and scan for the answer.
Writing. Task 1 is an email of 150 to 200 words. Match the tone to the reader: friendly for a neighbour, formal for a manager. Task 2 asks you to choose an option in a survey and explain why. Answer every point in the prompt.
Speaking. Use your preparation time to plan two or three points, then speak until the timer ends. Silence costs more than a small grammar slip.
Practise speaking to a timer on your phone, not to a person. CELPIP Speaking feels different when nobody nods back, and the first time should not be on test day.

Common questions
Can I take CELPIP in Nigeria?
Yes. Mafit registers candidates for CELPIP at official test centres, with Lagos and Abuja as the usual choices. Your counsellor confirms the date and seat.
Is CELPIP easier than IELTS?
Neither is easier overall. CELPIP suits candidates who prefer speaking to a computer and everyday Canadian topics; IELTS suits those who prefer a face to face Speaking test.
How do CELPIP scores convert to CLB?
Directly. CELPIP levels 3 to 12 match CLB 3 to 12, so a level 9 is CLB 9.
How long does CELPIP take?
CELPIP-General takes just under three hours, with all four skills in one sitting on a computer.
