Section 01

What does CELPIP stand for and who owns it?

CELPIP stands for the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program. It is developed and administered by Paragon Testing Enterprises, a Canadian testing organisation that has been part of Prometric since 2021. The test measures the practical English people use in everyday, work and study situations. Today CELPIP is designated by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), recognised by a range of Canadian professional bodies and, for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, accepted by the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs.

In CELPIP, every reference, accent, vocabulary set and writing scenario is built around Canadian context. The voicemail you transcribe in Listening is left by a Canadian voice. The neighbour you write to in Writing Task 1 lives in a Canadian suburb. The image you describe in Speaking shows a Canadian winter sidewalk.

Section 02

How is CELPIP scored?

CELPIP scores map directly to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), the 12-level national standard for describing English ability in Canada. Each skill is reported as a level from 0 to 12. Levels 3 to 12 match CLB 3 to 12 directly, level 2 matches CLB 1 and 2, and levels 0 and 1 mean there was not enough information to assess.

Each of the four skills receives its own level, so you always know exactly which skill to work on. Before you book, always confirm the CELPIP version and minimum score required by the organisation you are applying to. Some regulated professions ask for a different test.

Section 03

CELPIP General vs CELPIP General LS.

Paragon offers two CELPIP test variants:

  • CELPIP General tests all four English skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). This is the full test and the version most candidates sit, completed in one sitting in under three hours.
  • CELPIP General LS tests only Listening and Speaking. This is the shorter version for purposes that only ask for listening and speaking. It takes about an hour, costs less, and is the version IRCC designates for citizenship applications.

Check which version the organisation you are applying to asks for before you book.

Check First

Requirements differ by organisation. Confirm the version, the minimum level for each skill, and whether a test taken online is accepted before you book.

Section 04

What makes CELPIP different.

CELPIP has four features that set it apart from other English tests.

First, it is entirely computer-delivered, with Speaking recorded through a headset instead of a face-to-face interview. Second, all four skills are tested in one sitting of under three hours. Third, results are released online, usually 2 to 4 business days after the test, according to celpip.ca. Fourth, Writing is typed, so typing speed and accuracy matter as much as handwriting would elsewhere.

CELPIP General Format · Section-by-Section

Under three hours. Four skills. One sitting.

The CELPIP General Test takes about 157 to 179 minutes, in one sitting at the computer. Listening and Speaking use a headset with microphone, and answers are typed, clicked or spoken into the microphone. There is no live examiner, and the test centre gives you a pen and notepaper for notes.

Section 0146to 55 min

Listening

Six parts: Listening to Problem Solving, a Daily Life Conversation, for Information, to a News Item, to a Discussion, and to Viewpoints. You hear everyday conversations, news items and discussions, then answer multiple-choice questions. Each recording plays once.

6Parts
0-12Level
OnceAudio Plays
Common Mistake

Many candidates wait to “hear the full passage” before noting answers. The single-play format punishes that habit. Train to take active notes during, not after, audio.

Section 0243to 56 min

Reading

Four parts: Reading Correspondence, Reading to Apply a Diagram, Reading for Information, Reading for Viewpoints. You read emails, diagrams, articles and opinion pieces, then answer multiple-choice questions. Test of practical Canadian English comprehension, not literary analysis.

4Parts
43-56Minutes

Common Mistake

Reading every passage word-for-word burns time. Skim the question types first, then scan the passage for answers, and confirm before you move on.

Section 0353minutes

Writing

Two typed tasks: Task 1, Write an Email (150 to 200 words, 27 minutes) responding to a workplace or personal scenario. Task 2, Responding to Survey Questions (150 to 200 words, 26 minutes) taking a position on a real-world choice. Scored on Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability, Task Fulfillment.

2Tasks
150-200Words Each
4Score Criteria
Common Mistake

Writing too formally. CELPIP rewards register-appropriate English. An email to a friend should sound friendly, not academic. Task 2 should sound conversational, not journalistic.

Section 0415minutes

Speaking

Eight tasks recorded into your headset microphone: Giving Advice, Personal Experience, Describing a Scene, Predicting, Comparing & Persuading, Dealing with a Difficult Situation, Expressing Opinions, Describing an Unusual Situation. Each task gives you a short preparation time, then 60 to 90 seconds to speak. There is no examiner and no follow-up question.

8Tasks

60-90sSpeak Each
Common Mistake

Going silent for the last 10 seconds when ideas run dry. The recording captures silence. Always end with a closing summary sentence (“So overall, that is why I would…”) even if filler.

How to Score High in CELPIP

Eight practical strategies for a high CELPIP score.

Each tip addresses a specific habit that commonly costs candidates marks. Practise them with Paragon’s free official practice tests on celpip.ca.

Tip 01

Typing speed is half your writing score

CELPIP Writing asks for two typed responses of about 150 to 200 words each in 53 minutes. Slow typing eats into your planning time. Drill typing daily for three weeks with a free typing trainer until you type comfortably and accurately.

Tip 02

Master Canadian voicemail rhythm

The Listening “Problem Solving” task hinges on understanding fast, casual Canadian voicemails. Train your ear with CBC Radio podcasts and Canadian YouTubers for accent, pace and slang. Twenty minutes a day builds your ear quickly.

Tip 03

Note-taking during audio, not after

CELPIP Listening audio plays once. Strong candidates use a consistent shorthand system to capture key facts as they hear them, then answer questions from their notes.

Tip 04

For Speaking, fill the full time

Stopping early leaves marks on the table. Practice with a stopwatch until you can talk for 85+ seconds on any prompt. Ending mid-sentence is better than ending early.

Tip 05

Use register-appropriate vocabulary

CELPIP Writing penalises tonal mismatch. An email to a colleague using “henceforth” sounds wrong. Build two vocabulary lists: casual (emails to friends, neighbours) and semi-formal (business email, survey responses). 100 words each.

Tip 06

Memorise 3 structural templates

For Writing Task 2 (survey responses) and Speaking Task 5 (comparing & persuading), 3 reusable opinion-paragraph structures cut your planning time sharply. Simple frameworks such as PEEL and OREO work well.

Tip 07

Answer every question

A blank answer can never earn a mark. Never leave Reading or Listening blank. Mark your best choice, move on, and return if time allows.

Tip 08

Mock under real conditions

A mock done late at night tells you very little. Do at least three full practice tests in the morning, in a quiet room, with a headset, in one sitting. Real conditions surface real weaknesses before they cost you on test day.
