The document the visa runs on

Your Confirmationof Enrolment. The eCoE. Not the same as an offer, and the visa needs it.

An offer letter is a start, not the finish. The eCoE is the official document the subclass 500 visa requires. Learn what it is, how to get it, and what every line on it means.

The honest version

An offer isnot enough.

This trips up so many students. You receive a glossy offer letter, feel you are over the line, and assume you can lodge the visa. You cannot. An offer is an invitation to enrol, not proof that you have.

The document the subclass 500 actually requires is the eCoE, your electronic Confirmation of Enrolment. You only get it after you accept an offer and pay the deposit. Understand that one distinction and the whole step makes sense.

Provider & CRICOS code

Confirms your provider and course are registered on CRICOS, the official register of courses for international students.

Why it matters

If the course is not CRICOS-registered, it cannot support a student visa. This is the first thing that is checked.

The distinction that matters

Offer letter vs eCoE.

They look similar and arrive close together, but they do very different jobs. Here is the difference, side by side.

Comes first

Offer letter

An invitation to enrol, setting out the course, fees and any conditions
May be conditional, pending grades, English or documents
You respond by accepting and paying the deposit
Cannot be used to lodge the student visa on its own
Comes after

eCoE

Official proof you are enrolled, issued by your CRICOS provider
Issued after you accept the offer and pay the deposit
Carries the eCoE number you enter into ImmiAccount
Required to lodge the subclass 500 student visa

What shapes your eCoE

Conditions & catches.

A few things decide whether and when your eCoE is issued, and whether it later changes. Know them so nothing surprises you.

Conditional offers

Many offers are conditional on final grades, English or documents. Meet the conditions and the offer becomes unconditional, then you can proceed.

The deposit

Paying the required tuition deposit is what triggers the eCoE. It is not an extra fee, it counts toward your tuition.

OSHC alongside

Your health cover is usually arranged around this point, and its dates appear on the eCoE.

Packaged courses

If you package an ELICOS or pathway with your main course, you may receive more than one eCoE.

Deferring or changing

If you defer or switch course, your provider reissues the eCoE with the new details.

Check every line

Before you lodge, confirm names, dates and the eCoE number are correct. Errors cause visa delays.

Questions, answered

The eCoE, asked.

Q1What is a Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE)?
The electronic Confirmation of Enrolment, official proof that you are enrolled in a CRICOS course, issued by your provider. The student visa requires it.
Q2What is the difference between an offer letter and a CoE?
An offer letter is an invitation to enrol. The eCoE is proof you have enrolled, issued after you accept the offer and pay the deposit. Only the eCoE works for the visa.
Q3How do I get my eCoE?
Accept your chosen offer, meet any conditions, and pay the required deposit. Your provider then issues the eCoE.
Q4Do I need the eCoE for the student visa?
Yes. You cannot lodge the subclass 500 without it, and its number goes into your ImmiAccount application.
Q5Is the deposit an extra cost?
No. The deposit is part of your tuition, not an additional fee. It counts toward what you owe.
Q6Can my eCoE change after it is issued?
Yes. If you defer your start or change course, your provider reissues the eCoE with the updated details.
Q7How does Mafit help with the eCoE?
We help you choose an offer, accept it, manage the deposit, and check your eCoE line by line before you lodge the visa.
