The student visaSubclass 500.One visa, a handful of boxes to tick. Here is every one.
Almost every international student in Australia studies on this single visa. Get its parts right and the door opens.
Not complicated.Just specific.
The subclass 500 is not a maze. It is a clear set of requirements that every approved student meets: the right course, the funds, the cover, and a genuine plan.
What changed is the scrutiny. Officers now look harder at whether each box is truly ticked. So the winning move is simple, tick every box properly, with evidence, the first time. That is exactly what we set up with you.
The anatomy of your visa.
Six parts make up the subclass 500. Tap each one to light it up on your visa and see what it really means.
International students coming to Australia for full-time study at an approved provider. It is the single visa that covers school, vocational, university and research study.
You must hold a place in a course registered on CRICOS, the official register for courses open to overseas students. No CRICOS course, no subclass 500.
You can work up to 48 hours a fortnight while your course is running, and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. Research masters and PhD students have unlimited work once they begin.
Granted for the length of your course, generally up to five years. Shorter courses get shorter visas, and you can extend by enrolling in further study.
Stay enrolled full-time, keep your OSHC, maintain satisfactory attendance and progress, and keep your details current. These conditions protect your status.
You can include a partner and dependent children. Partners get work rights and children can study. Including family raises the funds you must show.
Your work clock.
The subclass 500 lets you work, with one rule that flips depending on the time of year. Tap to see it.
The fine print, plainly
Volunteering and unpaid work count toward the 48-hour limit during term. Watch unpaid internships.
Work must not start before your course begins.
Research masters and PhD students get unlimited hours once the course has commenced.
You will need a Tax File Number to be paid properly once you arrive.
Funds you can prove.
Australia asks you to show genuine access to enough money for your first year. We will not quote a fixed figure here because it is set by the government and it changes, but here is what it covers.
Tuition
Your first year of course fees, as set by your university or college.
Living costs
A 12-month living amount set by the Department of Home Affairs. We confirm the current figure with you, plus more for any family.
Travel
The cost of getting to Australia and home again.
The key word is genuine access. Officers want to see real, stable funds, such as bank statements with history or a formal education loan, not a balance that appears overnight. We help you assemble evidence that holds up.
