Doctor visits
OSHC covers a portion of the standard fee for seeing a GP. Some clinics bill the insurer directly, others you claim back.
Single, couple or family.
OSHC comes in three shapes depending on who travels with you. Everyone on your visa needs to be covered, for the whole stay.
Single cover
Just you. The most common policy, for students travelling alone.
Couple cover
You and your partner on your visa. One policy covering you both.
Family cover
You, your partner and children. Needed when dependants are on your visa.

Dental and optical
Routine dental and glasses are generally not in basic OSHC. An extras policy can add them.
Waiting periods
Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy usually have a waiting period before you can claim.
Gap payments
OSHC often covers a portion of a fee, not all of it. You pay the difference, called the gap.
